Maridadi — the studio

What it costs, and how long it takes.

Every service, with a real price band and real chair time beside it. Two things move the number: how much hair there is, and how many locs it is divided into. Find yourself on both and you will know roughly what your appointment costs before you message us.

01Services & prices

Everything we do, and what it costs.

Twelve services, all priced in the open. Every figure is a starting point confirmed in the chair — loc work varies with density, length and how much new growth has come in, and we would rather tell you that here than at the till.

Maintenance

Keeping locs you already have healthy, on a sensible interval.

  • Root Retwist

    Most booked

Clean roots, kept deliberately loose at the scalp.

from KSh 2,500 to KSh 7,500, 1 hour to 5 hours 20 minutes in the chair

Standard root maintenance on a four to six week interval — soon enough to keep the new growth tidy, far enough apart that the roots are never under constant tension. We palm-roll rather than over-twist, and we will happily tell you when you have come in too early. Traction alopecia at the hairline is almost always the result of tight, frequent retwists, and the edges are the slowest part of the scalp to forgive.

Who it suitsLoc wearers on a four to six week cycle who want tidy roots without tension at the hairline.

What’s includedBooked at four to six week intervals. Includes wash, root maintenance, palm-rolling and a light finish — no gel wall, no drying under tension. If you come in before four weeks we will say so and you will not be charged for the visit.

  • Interlocking

Root maintenance with no twisting and no gel.

from KSh 3,000 to KSh 8,800, 1 hour 15 minutes to 7 hours in the chair

The loc is pulled through its own root with a tool on a rotating four-point pattern, so nothing depends on product or on the loc staying still. It is the honest option for very fine hair, active swimmers and anyone whose retwists never hold past a week. Done on too tight a rotation it thins the root, so we keep the interval at six to eight weeks and change the entry point every time.

Who it suitsFine hair, swimmers, gym regulars, and anyone whose retwists never hold past a week.

What’s includedSix to eight week intervals, never sooner — interlocking on a short rotation is the fastest way to thin a root. We change the entry point every session and keep a note of which direction we used last.

  • Freeform Support

Hands off the pattern, hands on the health.

from KSh 2,500, 1 hour to 2 hours in the chair

For locs left to form on their own terms: we wash, separate at the roots where locs are creeping toward each other, and treat the scalp — and otherwise leave the shape alone. Separation is the entire job here, because two locs that merge quietly over three months become one heavy loc you cannot part again. No retwisting, no reshaping, no opinions about your congos unless you ask for them.

Who it suitsFreeform and semi-freeform locs that want washing, separating and a healthy scalp — and nothing else.

What’s includedOne flat rate, because the job is genuinely the same whatever your locs look like: wash, separate at the roots where locs are creeping together, treat the scalp, dry properly. No retwisting, no reshaping. Every eight to twelve weeks is plenty.

  • Detox & Deep Clean

    Most booked

Strips years of build-up. Locs come out lighter.

from KSh 3,000 to KSh 4,800, 1 hour 15 minutes to 3 hours 10 minutes in the chair

A clarifying soak followed by a slow rinse that pulls out residue from waxes, heavy butters, hard water and product layered over months. Build-up is what makes mature locs feel heavy, smell sour when they dry, and lighten unevenly — it sits inside the loc where lather never reaches. We finish with a light protein-and-moisture step and a proper dry, because a loc put away damp is where mildew starts.

Who it suitsLocs that feel heavy, smell sour as they dry, or have years of butter and wax sitting inside them.

What’s includedPriced on length only — build-up sits inside the loc, so it is the volume of hair that decides how long the soak and the rinse take, not how many locs you have. Includes the clarifying soak, a slow rinse, a light protein-and-moisture step and a full dry before you leave. Most people need this twice a year.

Starting locs

The first parting, the loc count, and everything that follows from it.

  • Starter Locs

    Most booked

The first parting. Everything after this follows it.

from KSh 6,500 to KSh 19,000, 2 hours 30 minutes to 12 hours in the chair

We map your parting grid to your head shape and hair density, then start each loc with comb coils, two-strand twists or braids depending on your texture — coils suit looser curl patterns, braids hold better on fine hair. The grid is the one decision you cannot undo cheaply, so we take our time and show you the plan in a mirror before a single section is set. Expect four to six weeks of settling before your first retwist; we book that appointment on the day so you are not left guessing.

Who it suitsAnyone starting locs from loose hair, including after a big chop or growing out a relaxer.

What’s includedLength here means the hair you are starting with, not the locs you will end up with. Size is the parting grid, and it is the one decision that is expensive to undo — we agree it in a mirror before the first section is set. Above 150 locs we would usually steer you to a proper microloc grid instead.

  • Microlocs

Two hundred or more. Fine, light, endlessly styleable.

from KSh 12,500 to KSh 25,000, 5 hours 30 minutes to 14 hours in the chair

A high count of very small locs, installed over one long session or split across two days, and maintained by interlocking rather than twisting. The payoff is weight and versatility — microlocs fall and style much closer to loose hair — but the install is the longest appointment we offer and the first year needs discipline about separation. We will be straight with you at the consultation about whether your density supports the count you want.

Who it suitsPeople who want a high loc count and the versatility that comes with it, and whose density can carry it.

What’s includedA microloc install starts at 100 locs, so within this service size means the finished count: large is 100 to 120, medium 120 to 150, small 150 to 200, micro 200 and above. Below 100 locs it is a standard install and we quote it as Starter Locs. Anything past about ten hours we split across two days rather than push through — your scalp and our hands both do better work that way.

  • Loc Extensions

Full length from day one, blended so the join disappears.

from KSh 9,000 to KSh 39,000, 3 hours to 13 hours in the chair

Human hair or premium synthetic locs attached to your own hair, matched for diameter, texture and colour so the join sits invisibly a few centimetres from the scalp. Choose your final length and thickness at the consultation — going too thin for your density is the usual regret, because thin extensions on heavy hair strain the anchor point. Priced from, and quoted properly once we know the count and the length.

Who it suitsAnyone who wants finished length from day one, either as a new install or added to existing locs.

What’s includedLength here is the finished length you want, and it is the main cost — the hair itself is included in these figures, matched for diameter, texture and colour. Size is the count you are adding to. Going thinner than your own density supports is the usual regret, because the anchor point carries the weight. Long, high-count installs run over two days.

Repair & restoration

Thinning roots, broken locs and hairlines that need a rest.

  • Loc Repair

    Most booked

Thinning roots, splits and breaks, reknitted by hand.

from KSh 2,800, 1 hour to 3 hours in the chair

Interlocking-thin roots, marriages between neighbouring locs, splits at the midshaft and locs snapped clean off are all repairable — we reinforce the weak point with your own shed hair or a matched filler and knit it back to full diameter. Repairs are quoted per loc after we look at the whole head, because ten fragile roots and one broken loc are very different jobs. If the cause is tension rather than accident, we will also change how your maintenance is done, otherwise the same locs break again.

Who it suitsThinning roots, snapped or merged locs, and anyone who has been told cutting is the only option.

What’s includedQuoted per loc after we have looked at the whole head, because ten thinning roots and one loc snapped clean off are completely different jobs. From KSh 500 per loc, with a KSh 2,800 minimum for the visit. We do not quote repair over the phone or from a photo alone — send pictures and we will tell you what we can see, then confirm in the chair.

Styling & colour

Work on the length rather than the root, so nothing pulls on new growth.

  • Styling

    Most booked

Pinned, coiled, half-up — set for the day or the week.

from KSh 1,800 to KSh 4,500, 35 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes in the chair

Everything from a quick pinned half-up to a fully sculpted set for an event, worked on locs you already have. We style off the length rather than off the root wherever possible, so nothing pulls on new growth, and we use pins that come out without taking hair with them. Tell us how long you need it to hold and whether you are sleeping in it — the answer changes the whole approach.

Who it suitsMature locs that need to be finished for an event, a shoot, or a week of not thinking about it.

What’s includedStyling on locs you already have, worked off the length rather than the root so nothing pulls on new growth. Tell us how many days it needs to hold and whether you are sleeping in it — that changes the whole approach, and the price with it.

  • Colour

    Most booked

Considered tones, applied with the loc structure in mind.

from KSh 4,500 to KSh 13,000, 1 hour 30 minutes to 6 hours 30 minutes in the chair

Full colour, root shadowing or placed highlights, always with a strand test first — locs hold dye far longer than loose hair and lift unevenly through a compacted core. We stay conservative on lift for anyone below a mature loc stage, since bleach and a soft, still-forming loc do not survive each other. Colour is always followed by a protein rebuild and a moisture plan you take home.

Who it suitsMature locs only, and people who want tone rather than a dramatic lift and will keep the protein up.

What’s includedIncludes a strand test, the colour itself and the protein rebuild afterwards. Locs drink far more product than loose hair, which is why length moves this price more than anything else. We will not bleach a loc that has not matured, and we will tell you that at the strand test rather than halfway through.

Kids & bridal

Two appointments that need their own pace and their own rules.

  • Junior Locs

Gentle, quick, and never tight. Ages 4 to 14.

from KSh 1,800 to KSh 3,000, 50 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes in the chair

Starting and maintaining locs on children, with a light hand and short sessions — a child sitting still for four hours is a child who will fight you next time. We keep sections generous, tension minimal and product simple, and we teach the parent the two-minute nightly routine that does most of the work. Retwists are booked at six to eight weeks; on young scalps, less often is genuinely better.

Who it suitsChildren aged 4 to 14, first locs or maintenance, with a parent in the studio throughout.

What’s includedAges 4 to 14, priced on length only — we keep sections generous whatever the age, so count is not a variable here. For under-12s we cap the session at two hours and finish over two visits if we need to; a child forced to sit for four hours is a child who fights you next time. A parent or guardian stays in the studio throughout.

  • Bridal & Events

A trial, a timeline, and a set that survives the day.

from KSh 9,000, 2 hours to 4 hours in the chair

Booked as a trial run plus the day itself, so nothing about the final look is a surprise at 6am. We build around your headpiece, veil or gele and pin for a full day of movement, photographs and heat. Travel to your venue within Nairobi is included in the quote; we also brief whoever is with you on how to take it down safely that night.

Who it suitsBrides, bridal parties, and anyone with a fixed date, a headpiece and no room for surprises.

What’s includedConsultation required, and the figure covers both appointments: a full trial run four to six weeks before the day, and the day itself. Travel to your venue within Nairobi is included. Headpiece, veil or gele changes the pinning entirely, so bring it to the trial. Booked with a larger deposit than a standard appointment because the date comes off our calendar.

Prices shown are “from” bands across every length and loc size. The full rate card, including the length and size tiers and every add-on, is in the next section.

02The rate card

The whole rate card, in the open.

Two things move the price of loc work: how much hair there is, and how many locs it is divided into. Find yourself on both axes below and you will know roughly what your appointment costs before you message us.

Length — how much hair

Short
Above the shoulder. Includes anything from a fresh start to a chin-length bob.
Medium
Shoulder to mid-back. The length most of our regulars are at.
Long
Mid-back to waist. Add roughly an hour to any session at this length.
Extra long
Past the waist. Washing and drying alone is a serious part of the appointment.

Loc size — how many locs

Micro
150 locs and up, pencil-thin or finer. Falls closest to loose hair, and the most demanding to install and maintain.
Small
100 to 150 locs, about the width of a drinking straw. Versatile without being fragile.
Medium
60 to 100 locs, roughly pencil-width. The common choice, and the easiest to live with.
Large
Under 60 locs, chunky or freeform. Fastest to maintain, heaviest per loc, hardest to make smaller later.

One rate, quoted in the chair

These are not priced off a table, because the work genuinely does not follow one. The figure below is the floor and the honest number comes after we have looked at the whole head.

Loc Repair
from KSh 2,800, 1 hour to 3 hours in the chair
Quoted per loc after we have looked at the whole head, because ten thinning roots and one loc snapped clean off are completely different jobs. From KSh 500 per loc, with a KSh 2,800 minimum for the visit. We do not quote repair over the phone or from a photo alone — send pictures and we will tell you what we can see, then confirm in the chair.
Freeform Support
from KSh 2,500, 1 hour to 2 hours in the chair
One flat rate, because the job is genuinely the same whatever your locs look like: wash, separate at the roots where locs are creeping together, treat the scalp, dry properly. No retwisting, no reshaping. Every eight to twelve weeks is plenty.
Bridal & Events
from KSh 9,000, 2 hours to 4 hours in the chair
Consultation required, and the figure covers both appointments: a full trial run four to six weeks before the day, and the day itself. Travel to your venue within Nairobi is included. Headpiece, veil or gele changes the pinning entirely, so bring it to the trial. Booked with a larger deposit than a standard appointment because the date comes off our calendar.

Add-ons

Booked alongside a service rather than instead of one. Each adds its own time to the appointment, which is why the minutes are listed beside the price.

  • Wash & Steam

KSh 1,200, adds about 45 min to the appointment

A full wash with a steam treatment before we start, and a proper dry after. Add this if you cannot get your locs completely dry at home — damp locs are the single most common reason a session runs long.

  • Deep Protein Treatment

KSh 1,800, adds about 45 min to the appointment

Rebuilds locs that have gone soft, stretchy or fluffy at the midshaft. Standard after colour, worth it once or twice a year otherwise. Overdone it makes locs brittle, so we will tell you if you do not need it.

  • Clarifying Scalp Detox

KSh 2,000, adds about 50 min to the appointment

A scalp-only clarifying treatment for flaking, itch and product sitting at the roots. Lighter than the full Detox service, which cleans inside the locs themselves.

  • Hot-Oil Scalp Treatment

KSh 1,500, adds about 35 min to the appointment

Warmed oil worked into the scalp with a slow massage, not onto the locs. Best after a wash and before retwisting, and genuinely the nicest twenty minutes of the appointment.

  • Loc Jewellery Fitting

KSh 800, adds about 25 min to the appointment

Cuffs, coils and beads fitted so they sit without sliding and come off without cutting. Bring your own or choose from the studio tray. We keep the count sensible — jewellery is weight, and weight lives at the root.

  • Style Set

KSh 2,000, adds about 45 min to the appointment

An updo, barrel roll or pinned set added to a maintenance appointment so you leave finished rather than just tidy. Holds three to five days with a scarf at night.

  • Colour Top-Up

KSh 2,500, adds about 1 hr to the appointment

Refreshes existing colour at the roots and pulls the tone back through faded ends. For already-coloured locs only — a first colour is booked as the full Colour service with a strand test.

  • Home Service

KSh 3,500, adds about 45 min to the appointment

We come to you within Nairobi, bringing tools, a dryer and a wash basin. Add travel time either side and note that we cannot do colour or a full detox off-site — those need studio plumbing.

The deposit

KSh 1,000to hold an appointment

Paid by M-PESA when we confirm your appointment, and deducted in full from your final bill — it is not an extra charge. It moves with you if you reschedule with at least 24 hours notice. Inside 24 hours, or if you do not arrive, the deposit covers the slot we held and could not resell. Long installs and bridal bookings take a larger deposit, which we tell you before you pay anything.

KSh 3,000 for the bookings that block a whole day: full installs over four hours, and all bridal bookings. Move or cancel with at least 24 hours notice and the deposit moves with you.

The balance is settled in the studio at the end of your appointment, and we confirm the exact figure with you before we start work — never after. Nothing is charged through this website; booking here just sends us a message.

Every figure on this page is a starting point, not a quote. Density, how much new growth has come in, how much detangling the roots need and the condition of existing locs all move the number, and we confirm the real one at your consultation — before any work begins. If it is going to be more than we said, you hear it while you are still deciding, not once you are in the chair.
